How to File ITR Online in India — Step by Step Guide 2025

Who Should File ITR?

You must file ITR if your gross income exceeds ₹2.5 lakh (₹3L for senior citizens, ₹5L for super seniors). Even if income is below threshold, file if you want a refund, carry forward losses, or have foreign assets.

Step-by-Step ITR Filing Process

1. Login to incometax.gov.in with PAN and password. 2. Go to e-File > Income Tax Returns > File Income Tax Return. 3. Select Assessment Year (AY 2026-27 for FY 2025-26). 4. Choose filing mode: Online. 5. Select ITR form. 6. Pre-filled data loads — verify and edit if needed. 7. Enter deductions (80C, 80D, etc.). 8. Compute tax, pay if any balance. 9. Preview and Submit. 10. E-verify within 30 days.

ITR Filing Deadline FY 2025-26

Due date for non-audit cases: 31st July 2026. For audit cases: 31st October 2026. Late filing fee: ₹1,000 (income ≤ ₹5L) or ₹5,000 (income > ₹5L).

Documents Needed

Form 16 (from employer), Form 26AS and AIS (from IT portal), bank statements, investment proofs (PPF, ELSS, LIC), home loan interest certificate, rent receipts for HRA.
